Representation of women in Advertising:

Advertising is a huge field in Bangladesh. Women are presented in many different forms in advertisements. But they can be divided into certain categories.

One category of adds are such were women are just used to get attraction. They are used to get people to watch the add and also to buy the products. In these kind of adds, the role of women is of no use, it’s just there to get attention.

Another category is where women are presented in sari’s, taking care of children and homes and waiting upon their husbands when they come back home from office. This is considered the ideal role of women. These type of ads face a lot of criticism from the feminists but they still remain.

However, there are some ads where women are shown as working women. This type of ads show that the thought process has slightly changed the viewpoint on the role of women. A Banglalink advertisement where a young girl was a journalist is a good example of such a change. However, even in the ads where women are shown as working, their main priority seems to be their home and how they balance work and home.

Still, this is a welcoming change and it is hoped that more ads where women are portrayed as independent personailities capable of taking care of themselves will be produced.

the article is very relevant and a burnings issue of days.
i liked it very much.

Sometimes women are portrayed as a showcase in the advertisement. This is also a form of abusing women. We should protest against it. Nice style of writing..keep it up :-)

yes i do agree that women in some ads are portrayed in forms of sexual products, meaning usage of women and their beauty for products that doesnot even concern sexuality or beauty.

It is true that female model is casted to seek attention of the audience. Sometimes, advertiser focuses less on the product rather on the female model. Why does woman all the time make food or clean dishes for her family? its very conventional way to portray women in media. However, this practise is shifting towards new ideas which praiseworthy and even more practical. nice article indeed.

Hmm it is true, that women are not represented properly in our media. Especially in adverts of Unilever namely in Fair and Lovely, they are projected in ways which are simply inhuman!!! yet, that kind of adverts gets praised in our media, bcuz Unilever is such a huge source of their revenue. Overall, I appreciate the way you have highlight the points. Good job.

Being a student of the media department, I was invited to go to a very heated seminar on “Women and media”. I like how the subject isn’t finished being discussed there but is still an ongoing topic on your blog.

the way women are shown in the advertisements of soft drinks is ridiculous. it seems the makers put them in those ads only to make them dance on the peppy numbers, which has no connection with the advertised product.
